Preschool and Kindergarten Graduation in LA

There’s something so bittersweet about watching your little one grow up. One minute they’re clinging to your leg on their first day of preschool, and the next they’re proudly announcing that they’re off to “Big School”. These little milestones can seem small in the grand scheme of life, but for parents, they hold entire worlds of emotion. This is why I created Preschool and Kindergarten Graduation sessions in LA.

My own daughter is graduating preschool (TK) this year and is very excited to start Kindergarten in just a few months. I decided to create a graduation photoshoot to mark this special time. I’ve never offered these sessions before, but what can I say, I cried when I finished editing them and sat back to look at them all. They are so special and filled my heart with such joy. I realized I had to offer them as mini sessions for other parents to enjoy.

These sessions are about more than just adorable photos in tiny caps and gowns. They’re about freezing a moment in time before everything changes again. They capture the excitement, wonder, and endless possibilities that come with growing up — while still holding onto the sweetness of childhood for just a little longer. We played her favorite songs, included some of her favorite books, threw her cap in the air, and even danced on top of the little desk. She had a ball and I enjoyed every moment of capturing it all.

The preschoolers

For preschoolers graduating to kindergarten, this season is filled with magical anticipation. They’re learning independence, making friendships, discovering who they are, and stepping into a whole new adventure. Their imaginations are limitless, their smiles may be missing teeth, and they still believe they can become astronauts, princesses, superheroes, or even all at once. In fact, my own daughter told me she’s going to be Peppa Pig when she grows up. I did have to take a second to take that in and then told her, “yeah that’s kinda who I became when I grew up too.” She still hasn’t quite grasped that I’m the voice of all those books yet!

The Kindergartners

And then come the kindergartners heading into first grade — suddenly seeming taller, wiser, and just a little more grown up than they did the year before. First grade feels like such a big leap. Their handwriting improves, their conversations become even more fascinating, and they begin to find confidence in who they are. Capturing them at this exact age preserves all those beautiful little details that change so very quickly.

As moms, we spend so much of our time trying to hold onto fleeting moments. The tiny hands in ours. The excited chatter on the drive to school. The way they proudly show us their artwork or talk nonstop about their best friend or something they achieved that day. Childhood moves in seasons, and somehow every season feels both exhausting and impossibly short at the same time. Photos become the way we hold onto those memories.

They grow up so fast!

Years from now, these graduation portraits won’t just be cute pictures. They’ll transport you back to this chapter of life. You’ll remember the sound of their little voice, the sparkle in their beautiful eyes, and the excitement they felt about becoming “so big.” You’ll remember packing little lunches, tying tiny shoes, and watching them run into school with backpacks almost as big as they were.

These mini sessions are designed to celebrate exactly who your child is right now — joyful, playful, curious, and full of dreams. Whether they’re shy and sweet or bursting with energy, I always work to create images that feel authentic and heartfelt. The laughter, the proud smiles, the little expressions you never want to forget — those are the moments worth preserving.

And let’s be honest — as parents, we rarely get enough photos of our children that aren’t quick phone snapshots. Graduation mini sessions give you intentional, beautiful images that tell the story of this important milestone in a meaningful way.

The best part?

Kids absolutely love them and we have so much fun! There’s something magical about putting on a graduation cap and being celebrated for all they’ve accomplished. They feel proud, excited and important. Because these milestones deserve to be celebrated.

Before long, the baby cheeks fade, the tiny sneakers get replaced with bigger shoes, and the school years start flying by faster than one could ever imagine. Childhood has a way of slipping through our fingers while we’re busy living it. Recently I’ve photographed many high school senior graduation sessions where I’m shocked when parents email to book them in and I’m here wondering how they got from age 6 to 18 so quickly.

That’s why these sessions matter. They remind us to pause for just a moment and soak it all in.

The gap-toothed smiles.
The oversized backpacks.
The excitement about the future.
The tiny voice saying, “I’m going to big school!”

These are the moments that become treasures later.

Graduation mini sessions are not just about documenting a school transition — they’re about celebrating growth, childhood, and all the beautiful possibilities ahead. Because while they may be heading off to big school, they’ll always be your little one. And this is a moment worth remembering forever.
