Planning a Los Angeles Family Beach Photoshoot

If you’ve been searching for beach photoshoot outfit ideas and inspiration, here are some tips to get started. When planning a Los Angeles family or maternity beach photoshoot, dressing in a way that makes everything look cohesive can be challenging. You want to look stylish and comfortable while also ensuring that everyone in the family looks good together. Here are some ways to help you dress for a Los Angeles family beach photoshoot and make everything look cohesive.

Choose a Color Scheme for your Beach Photoshoot

The first step in dressing for a family photoshoot at the beach is to choose a color scheme. The color scheme should be based on the colors of the beach, such as pastel blues, pastel pink to bring in the sunset, and sandy browns. I recommend a combination of colors that complement each other. For example, you could choose a pastel pink, pastel blue and white color theme.

Coordinate Outfits

Once you have chosen a color scheme, it’s time to coordinate outfits. You can do this by choosing outfits that complement each other. For example, if one family member is wearing a pastel blue shirt, another family member could wear a pastel blue dress, another could wear a white romper and another could wear a white and pastel blue or pastel pink dress. This helps bring the overall look throughout the family with touches of the same color and creates a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy. It’s also important to match the style, are you going for a relaxed vibe or more of a dressed up vibe? You want to have the same style through everyone, again bringing the overall look together.

Choose Comfortable Clothing

When coming up with beach photoshoot outfit ideas, it’s important to choose clothing that is comfortable for your family members. This is especially important if you have young children who may get fussy if they are uncomfortable. Choose clothing that is lightweight, breathable, and easy to move in. Avoid clothing that is too tight or restrictive.

Consider the Weather

When dressing for a family photoshoot at the beach, it’s important to consider the weather. If it’s going to be hot and sunny, choose clothing that is lightweight and breathable. If it’s going to be cooler, consider layering with a light shawl or cardigan. Usually it’s pretty warm in Los Angeles but at some times through the year it can get cool at the beach and children are much happier throughout the session if they are comfortable and warm.

Accessorize

Accessories can help pull a look together and create a cohesive look. For a beach photoshoot, consider accessorizing with hats, maybe a blanket for the ground. In my Family and Maternity sessions I usually always bring a blanket along for some nice sitting shots, these kinds of images are beautiful with toddlers – big hugs and kisses, tickles and laughter. You can choose accessories that complement the color scheme and coordinate with each other. A large brimmed hat can add a great look to a maternity session with a slightly more boho vibe.

Avoid Logos and Slogans

When dressing for a family photoshoot at the beach, it’s best to avoid clothing with logos or slogans. This can be distracting in the photos and take away from the natural beauty of the beach. Stick to solid colors or simple patterns that complement the color scheme. This is really important when coming up with your beach photoshoot outfit ideas.

Think About Footwear

Footwear is an important part of dressing for a family photoshoot at the beach. You want to choose footwear that is comfortable and appropriate for the beach. Flip flops, sandals, and bare feet are all great options. Avoid high heels or dress shoes, as they may be difficult to walk in on the sand. In my sessions I always recommend bare feet at the beach, it helps give that overall relaxed vibe and what is better than toes in the sand? I love images of families kicking the sand and chasing the water, showing that really fun time. I have had many dads ask about their feet, don’t worry, if you have a session with me, I hand edit all of my images and everything will be looking nice and tidy!

Consider Your Background

When choosing clothing for a family photoshoot at the beach, it’s important to consider your background. You don’t want your clothing to blend in with the sand or water, but you also don’t want it to clash with the natural colors of the beach. Choose clothing that stands out against the background, but doesn’t clash with it.

Keep it Simple

When in doubt, keep it simple. Simple, classic clothing is always a good choice for family photoshoots. Stick to solid colors or simple patterns, and avoid anything too flashy or trendy. This will ensure that your photos look timeless and elegant, and that you will be able to enjoy them for years to come.

Some great places to check for outfits would be H&M, Zara (they have beautiful pieces for babies and toddlers that look wonderful in photoshoots), Rylee and Cru, Free People. For maternity sessions, I have a client closet available for moms, but if you are looking for your own dress a great place to check out is Etsy. They have some beautiful pieces.

Beach Photoshoot Outfit Ideas

In conclusion, dressing for a family photoshoot at the beach can be challenging, but by following these tips, you can create a cohesive look that is stylish and comfortable. Remember to choose a color scheme, coordinate outfits, choose comfortable clothing, consider the weather, accessorize, avoid logos and text, think about footwear, consider your background, and keep it simple. When you start planning, I recommend starting with moms outfit first since that can be the hardest to get right. Once that is sorted you can build from there and the other outfits come together pretty quickly and easily.
